Yesterday, Greg Proops' latest comedy album "Elsewhere" was released! The album features roughly an hour of non-stop hilarity. From angry, edgy, biting humor to his razor sharp wit and sheer plethora of intelligence and astounding vocabulary, this album will take you on a whirlwind joyride of comedy. It can quite easily be considered his most vicious album yet, mercilessly tackling and throwing down on subjects concerning the miseries of living 'elsewhere', why Britney makes us feel good about our pathetic lives again, ponderings on how the Olsen twins' heads manage to stay afloat on their toothpick bodies, how Evel Knievel was actually the real life version of Wile E. Coyote, why women actually have brains and use them unlike men, and how Hillary Clinton's proverbial member is swift, massive, and entirely dangerous to all who threaten. These are just but a few grains of sand on the topics that are covered, as I could not even begin to properly do the genius of this album justice. You must - I require, nay, demand this of you - purchase it and listen to it for yourself, so that you, too, may feel the love for the Proopkitty and worship his comedic divinity.

There are two ways to go about purchasing. The album can be downloaded online in the form of MP3s from either iTunes or Amazon, or you can purchase a hard copy from A Special Thing Records. The cost is only a mere $10 either way.

A Touch Of Snark And Spice: A Greg Proops Net Exclusive

By Diane Shreve
September 11th, 2009

[GPN] Hello there, Greg! Allow me to premise this interview by saying thank you very much for your time and for agreeing to do this. I understand that you are a rather busy individual, so I just wanted to say thank you on behalf of not only myself, but all of the visitors of Greg Proops Net.

[Greg] My pleasure, you little rascals.

[GPN] You have mentioned a few times before in the past that you'd like to play a 'cool villain'. If you could be any villain whatsoever, what would be some notable character traits you'd love to portray? Or rather, what would your "dream role" be like, if you have one?

[Greg] Satan, a black knight, an evil Warlock. Troll, gremlin, sprite. I wanna be evil as Eartha Kitt once sang. I want to cheat at Jacks.

[GPN] Not very long ago, I caught wind of a pilot called "Simply Svelte" that was - please correct me if I'm wrong - developed by you and your wife. The comedy sitcom was described as being about 'a fashion guru who juggles work deadlines and his wild lifestyle as well as a girlfriend, an ex-wife, and a boyfriend'. To me, the premise alone sounds outright hilarious. What happened to "Simply Svelte", and is there any sort of possibility for it to be revived and / or picked up as a series? Also, were you originally set up to play the lead character?

[Greg] Don't want to tell. Let's not have someone steal it.

[GPN] As articulate, descriptive, and well-read as you are, I'm almost surprised you haven't penned a written work yourself. Have you ever thought about publishing a book (of any sort)?

[Greg] I will be reading books. One day if I can be bothered I might write something.

[GPN] Something that never fails to astound me is your sheer wealth of knowledge. To be sure, some have even likened you as a walking encyclopedia, as it seems that you can pull dates, facts, and political as well as pop cultural references out of the hat with ease. Allow me to take a moment to say just how greatly I admire this. Of course there's always the typical adage of 'just read a lot' to increase one's know-how, but I was curious if you attributed your seemingly endless mental capacity to something else - if you had a secret, of sorts, on how to not only take in information, but to remember it.

[Greg] You are capable of remembering anything you want. But we don't want to. I just read and watch movies and stuff and remember what I likes.

[GPN] Ok, I must ask about ocelots. Ocelots seem to be a long-term gag that has made many appearances - both in your improv, and in your stand-up material. Likewise, in the past you've not only termed your fans as 'ocelot kittens', but yourself as 'the big ocelot'. And, of course, there is the old joke of owning an ocelot whose name seems to change frivolously. So, the question is this... Just how did 'ocelots' come to play such a big role in your comedy, to the point where it's one of the things fans have come to know you by?

[Greg] Purely organic. I found one kitten and she blossomed, then they sprang forth endlessly. I love to watch them run and gambol.

[GPN] A bit of a random question, but were you a part of the 1999 cartoon series "Dilbert" at all?

[Greg] Yes, but I killed a guy by accident so they overreacted and fired me.

[GPN] As enraptured as you are with the popular American past-time that is baseball, I deem it only just to ask you a baseball-related question. You've said in the past that if you weren't a comic, you'd probably be a sports historian of sorts. Thus, I inquire of you... if you were presented with a "magical" baseball that could transport you back in time to see any one game, any place, any time, what game would that be, and why?

[Greg] The 1944 Negro Leagues All Star game with Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and Cool Papa Bell. Sam Lacy the writer told me Oscar Charleston was a better all around player than Willie Mays. He would have been great to see.

[GPN] A short time ago I stumbled across a rather interesting rumor. It was a note written on a very old fansite by an anonymous poster who claimed to know you back at San Francisco State. He alleged that you starred as the lead in the drama "Equus" back in 1981. First off, is this statement true? Secondly, if so, what was that experience like? I personally have not seen it, but from what I know of it, Equus is supposed to be an exceedingly emotional and somewhat taxing play.

[Greg] I did. Yes, I was naked. Scary skinny, then. Awesome equipment. The play is very moving and shocking. I loved playing the crazy boy. It helped me through my own young life.

[GPN] I don't recollect exactly when, but in another interview from not too awful long ago, you were discussing your new comedy album, Elsewhere, but you also mentioned something about a new comedy DVD as well. I was wondering if perhaps you could indulge me with further information on this DVD?

[Greg] It will be available on A Special Thing Records.

September 28th
"Elsewhere" Comedy CD Release Party
With Laura Kightlinger!
Dana Gould!
And Other Special Guests!
Largo
366 North La Cienega Blvd
310-855-0350
9 PM - God Willing

[GPN] Just recently you began filming season two of "True Jackson VP" as the character Max Madigan. Max is a sort of zany and flamboyant individual. How much influence did / do you have over the creation of Max and his character traits? In other words, is everything cut and dry scripted, or were you allowed to develop the character yourself to some extent? Also, has there been a specific episode that stands out in your mind as being particularly clever, funny, or just plain fun to film?

[Greg] I loved the character from the audition. Nothing is cut and dried. TV sitcom work is very collaborative. Do I make up new lines? Not that much. We all try to add bits and work on pace and delivery. The writers and producers Andy Gordon and Dan Koppelman are dead clever with a very clear comic vision. Our directors, crew, and everyone are top-notch.

I have had snakes on my head and had to fly in a lounge chair so they are all fun. I have got to work with Dave Foley and Andy Richter and Dave Gruber, so that part is just tremendous. The best part is working with Keke, Ashley, Matt, Danielle, Ronnie, and Robbie. They are hilarious and generous and we have each other's backs. And we poke at each other as you should.

[GPN] Head Games is, as we know, by far not your first dabble with the game show genre (if indeed game shows even have a genre). How has your experience with Head Games differed from that of VS. and Space Cadets?

[Greg] Well, Head Games is about science so that part is different. We shot in New York which made it funner. I like the genre because there are stakes. Remember, Whose Line is a faux game show.

[GPN] It seems that you're an exceedingly busy individual with little downtime. When you're not working, what would the absolutely divine, perfect day consist of?

[Greg] Breakfast with my wife on the balcony overlooking the Mediterranean. Two double cappuccinos and pastry. Buzzing to look at Roman ruins and driving back gazing at the sea. Lunch at a roadside place, prosciutto and melon. Long nap. Sunset walk to dinner outside. Wine and swordfish and oysters and cherries on ice. Iced peach tea in the square after. Late night shopping at Yves St. Laurent. Cigar.

[GPN] Looking back on everything you've accomplished, you have had quite the prolific life and career. What would you say is, thus far, your greatest achievement, and what goal(s) are you still striving towards?

[Greg] Marrying well.

I still strive to be funny - all the time. In stand-up, improv, and acting. Funny must be made, delicately.

As far as career, I am proud to know and work with the Comedy Store Players in London and the Whose Line crowd here. Drew Carey and Ryan Stiles have done everything for me.

The best thing I have been able to do is travel and do my act in all its guises. I'm for Ireland in October with Steve Frost, Andy Smart, and Richard Vranch. Should be great craic. Look it up.

[GPN] Lastly, because this is an interview for Greg Proops Net as a site exclusive, though I don't know how much of the site you've seen, or how often you've visited it, but what are some of your thoughts on the site?

[Greg] I hate the fat pictures of myself. But I actually go there to get details about my gigs and such. You often know more than I do. Should I be scared or just happy I can Google myself in your world? Both, a little.

[GPN] Thank you once again Greg, and we hope that you have an absolutely lovely day! Do you have any last comments?

[Greg] I love all the people who have followed my jokes and all. I truly do appreciate the love. There is no show all alone. I have been so happy to do what I always wanted: to be a fool. Thanks for letting and abetting.

Recently, GPN broke a bucketload of news concerning a string of new projects that it seemed that Greg was involved in. Well, thanks to the live interview Greg partook in on August the 6th on BlogTalkRadio, I was able to speak to him directly to obtain some more information concerning these projects. Overall, there was some good news mixed in with the bad.

To start with, it seems that the aforementioned possible Whose Line Is It Anyway?-like show return is currently at a halt. Even though he had mentioned that he couldn't speak of it, I still took a stab and inquired about it, wondering if he could allude to anything at all. Our conversation was as follows:

Greg: "I would exhale, because I don't think there's going to be anything really soon, but hopefully. We'll see. But the thing with Drew... I don't think so, and I would be dishonest if I said yes that it's going to happen, so..."
Diane: "So it's looking like a no-go?"
Greg: "Pretty much. For the moment, because you know, things change."
Diane: "Can you tell us more about it since it is looking like a no-go?"
Greg: "No, I can't. It was too much of Drew's thing, and it never got further than that, so I can't really tell you, but yeah, you know... it would have been everything that everybody would have wanted. But other things will happen."

While it does give us some answers, it also leaves a lot of room open for interpretation. Perhaps in the future something else will come about, which Greg was slightly hinting at - though that could have just been Greg being hopeful, but then again, possibly something is going on underground that he simply can't speak of. The fact that he said that 'it would have been everything that everybody would have wanted' leads me to believe that the original project with Drew was, indeed, similar to a Whose Line resurrection-type show. It is too bad, and very sad, that this will not be happening - at least, not sometime in the near future. We can only keep hoping!

Along the lines of bad news, it seems that "GSI: Game Scene Investigation" is, as Greg put it, "sleeping with the fishes". Apparently the pilot was actually created in 2007, but was never picked up. We regret to admit that this will not be happening whatsoever!

However, it's time to lighten the mood with some good news! I was able to garner some information from Greg concerning the mysterious pilot that he shot back on May 10th, 2009, at the Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown. (Scroll down to the news article "A New Pilot In The Works?" on May 26th to read more about the original finding.) This is what Greg responded with to my questioning:

"That was something that is still up in the air for Sundance Channel, and I don't think they've been able to make it happen yet, so I can't say that it's going to happen. It was Hari Kondabalo, who is a very funny young comedian, and Laura Swisher, and I, and the whole premise is that we go to different cultures and do stand-up. And I would be the wizened old baboon who they would come to as the law giver, because I've been a lot of places and I'm old, and they are in their late 20's, I reckon, and dead funny, and keen. And we would try to bring American, you know, things to other lands. And Hari is, you know, his family is from India, and Laura is, I think, a black girl who was raised by white people. I think she was adopted. So they have really interesting backgrounds and that was the whole premise, I think, was to send a representative slice of America abroad. But as I say, I don't think they've made a decision yet. It might still be alive. Let's all cross our fingers. That would have been really fun, because we would have traveled all around the world."

So we can only hope, and, as Greg says, cross our fingers, that this will come about. I, personally, find this an intriguing concept - a travel show meets comedy show sort of ordeal. As the normal point of travel shows is to focus on architecture, history, and the culture of a particular place, it might be interesting to see what, exactly, makes these cultures, these people, actually laugh - to what degrees would they respond to the three American comics. Again, hopefully Sundance will pick this up and make it happen!

Lastly, we still don't have any definition release dates on Elsewhere yet, but it looks like it's going to be soon. Greg recently approved the artwork and did some other things for the album, so I'm placing bets on a mid-autumn release. We also were able to learn that the material is from a little bit before the election - so it will be a bit dated. (However, anyone who knows Greg and his stand-up very well at all can tell you that he changes it constantly, and that the term 'dated' can thus be used loosely.) We'll keep you posted on news concerning Elsewhere as it comes around!

Finally, we just have one small snippet before we end this lengthy news posting. Greg Proops Net is proud to say that Greg has graciously consented to grant us an interview sometime in the near future! I don't know when the interview will be. It will be a written/typed interview and not live, but I, for one, am greatly looking forward to it. So be sure to keep an eye out for that as well!

Just recently, we heard of a rumor involving a possible resurrection of Whose Line (or, some sort of other improv show, that would involve at least Drew Carey and Greg Proops). However, out of the blue, it seems that murmurings of new projects have suddenly sprouted and taken wing!

It seems that we finally have a bit more information concerning Greg's newest album! Well over a year ago, we mentioned rumors of a new comedy CD coming out. Now the item officially has a name: Elsewhere. The CD is being released by "A Special Thing Records" (a company that is well-known for releasing comedy-related material). However, we still don't know of its release date, nor do we know the actual content of the CD. It had originally been rumored to be a CD featuring content from Greg's chat show at Largo, though this is not confirmed. However, speaking as one who has attended Largo a few times now, a Largo CD would be most welcome!

Greg's had a history of playing the role of 'television host'. He played this role well with shows such as Space Cadets, Rendez-View, and V.S. He's also hosted numerous other small items for television (such as Memory Skills). Thus, when it was just announced that Greg will reprising his role as a TV host for a brand-new game show called "Head Games", we were both intrigued and yet not too surprised to see him going back to bat at something which he obviously does well. "Head Games" will be shown on the Science Channel, and was created by and will be produced by Whoopi Goldberg. It is said that the show will involve videos of the craziest science riddles and questions. The show will be shot in front of a live studio audience in New York City, New York, and possible contestants are already being chosen! If you are interested in being a contestant, the casting call ad from Craigslist stated the following:

The Science Channel and Executive Producer Whoopi Goldberg are currently looking for a select group of bright, witty people who would like to appear as contestants on a new game show and aren't afraid to mix it up with host Greg Proops...and maybe win some cash. You don't need to know Einstein's Theories or be a master at quantum physics. You only need to choose the right answer...and have fun while you're doing it.

For more information on how to be a contestant, please click this link. Auditions are already being held, and filming is set to commence in late August, with the show rumored to begin airing early October.

If you're interested in attending a taping (or two or three) of "Head Games", email headgamesaudience@gmail.com and be sure to include your name and phone number so that a member of the audience department can contact you with more information.

But that's not all! Mr. Proops has definitely been keeping himself busy, as it was also just announced that he is piloting a new show for ESPN called "GSI: Game Scene Investigation". The only description we currently have of the show are as follows:

In the show, Greg will set out to investigate and uncover the truth behind some of sport's most famous myths. Are they real or fake?

Indeed, it's an interesting concept, especially to sports fans. As knowledgeable as Greg is about both history and sports (especially baseball), this is right up his alley. Stay tuned for further updates on when GSI will be hitting your television sets.

As a bit of pure speculation, just recently in an interview, Greg had mentioned that he was working on a possible new show that would involve him traveling all around the globe. Either there is yet another pilot in the works... or he was referring to GSI. (Don't forget about the mysterious pilot, too, that was filmed back in May!)

Either way, the Proopdog has been extremely busy as of late. With so many new projects and shows and comedy CDs, Greg is really strutting his stuff. And of course, he continues to tour with both his improv and stand-up, as well as is still a part of "True Jackson VP"!

In a recent interview from July 10th (of 2009), Greg dropped a hint alluding to something that could possibly be the thing that Whose Line Is It Anyway? fans have been hoping for for years now: Whose Line Is It Anyway? might be coming back in some form or another. The quote from the interview is as follows:

"Whose Line lives on forever and ever... We might be doing something. I can't really talk about it, but Drew's trying to whip up some improv thing."

Obviously, at this point, we can only merely speculate as to what, exactly, this means. This is no definite 'yes, Whose Line is coming back' or even a strong maybe - more like something that is in the works and being cooked up. However, the mere possibility for Whose Line to return - or at least, another improv show featuring the original Whose Line cast - is exciting, to say the least. We'll definitely be keeping tabs on this news snippet, so stay tuned for further updates!

"True Jackson VP", in which Greg Proops plays Max Madigan, is Nickelodeon's 2nd highest rated show, with the first season a booming success! While the current season is nearing its end, season two premieres in September. Very soon, however, you won't have to turn on Nick to catch re-runs (or download our videos here). On September 8th, 2009, True Jackson VP Season One Volume One will be released on DVD! The DVD will include two discs, though at this moment, it is unknown exactly what those two discs will consist of. As the DVD is titled "volume one", I am guessing that it will only feature the first half of the season, with a second volume - with the second half of season one - being released at a later date. However, rumor has it that the DVDs will have blooper reels and some behind-the-scenes footage! The DVD is currenly being priced at about $27, but you can pre-order it off of Amazon.com for only $20. The DVD is Region 1, which means that it is for U.S. and Canadian machines only (unless your player is universal and region-free).

The other day, I stumbled across an intriguing blog entry. The blog belongs to a woman by the name of Laura Swisher, an artist of sorts who has done television show hosting as well as standup. The entry was taken from May 10th, 2009, and discusses herself, a comic by the name of Hari Kondabalo, and Greg involved with a new project that was filmed on Mother's Day. The entry is as follows:

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Spent Mother's Day shooting in Chinatown with comics Hari Kondabalo and Greg Proops. This is us in the Grand Star Jazz Club after a stand-up show this afternoon.

I hope I don't jinx this project by writing about it, but I can say that this show would be AMAZING if it gets picked up, if only to hang out with Hari and Greg.

Spending time with Proops is like hanging out with a human encyclopedia. Want to talk about T.E. Lawrence, the Bataan Death March, the drug habits of your favorite legendary actors and anything related to cinema? Greg's your guy.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of both these guys and have got my fingers crossed that I'll be able to work with them in the relative near future.

As it is so vague, it is thus very much open to speculation, and will be treated as merely a rumor until more information materializes. Nevertheless, it would be nice to see Mr. Proops doing more than one show again!

"The Best Of Whose Line" will be a two disc DVD set consisting of ten episodes that are supposed to represent the absolute best of Whose Line. The region one (US & Canada only) DVD will be released on June 9th of this year.

Below is text from a statement released on tvshowsondvd.com that describes the DVD release in more detail:

Drew Carey hosts this American version of the British improvisational comedy series as an ensemble performs unrehearsed "games" before a live audience. No one gets voted off the show. That would be too easy. Instead contestants face crueler fates: be a fish on a TV dating show, Adam and Eve when they first converse, a doo-wop group singing about a girl (and a tragic taxidermy accident). We're not making this up. They are.

Host Drew Carey, a clever crew of comedy regulars and special guests (David Hasselhoff, Florence Henderson, Jerry Springer, Richard Simmons, bodybuilder Jane Tricker and more) come up with funny-on-the-fly in the hit series that crosses a game show with mad improvisation. Discover 10 of the show's best episodes with all of the censor bars and bleeps removed, so you can enjoy every bit of the delicious and daring funny business in all its glory. Uncensored means that the potential for laughter is unlimited!

Warner Home Video has announced that a DVD release titled Whose Line Is It Anyway? - The Best Of will come to stores on June 9th. This 2-disc, 300-minute release contains 10 favorite episodes of the classic, kooky series, at a cost of $24.98 SRP. Below is a list of those episodes:

Show No. 308 "Ryan smashing head" (First Aired: Thursday June 14, 2001)
Show No. 401 "good show with Wayne as Singing Bass and kissing Colin" (First Aired: Thursday September 6, 2001)
Show No. 413 Too Hot For Whose Line (First Aired: Wednesday October 3, 2001)
Show No. 512 "with Florence Henderson" (First Aired: Monday September 30, 2002)
Show No. 521 "with Richard Simmons" (First Aired: Friday June 20, 2003)
Show No. 610 "with Kathy Griffin & David Hasselhoff" (First Aired: Friday June 27, 2003)
Show No. 611 "with bodybuilder Jane Tricker" (First Aired: Friday July 11, 2003)
Show No. 505 Valentine's Day Show "with Loyola Marymount Cheerleaders" (First Aired: Saturday August 7, 2004)
Show No. 419 "Fluff your Garfield" show
Show No. 612 Jerry Springer in "Dubbing" game / Colin dancing in "Greatest Hits" game

Some time ago last year, GPN announced that Greg would be doing commentary work in the upcoming Wii Game "MadWorld". It has finally been announced that MadWorld will be released on March 10th for the US, and on March 20th for all countries that are members of the EU. Greg plays Howard, one of two Death Watch commentators. The game itself has an arcade gameplay structure, with flat primarily black and white images for a bit of an older school look. The story of the game is that, to quote the official MadWorld website:

"In Varrigan City, driven into quarantine and chaos by the outbreak of a deadly virus, 'survival of the fittest' takes on a whole new meaning as trapped citizens are pitted against each other in the gruesome sports show "Death Watch". Play as Jack and fight to the death as he battles to win the ultimate prize - his life."

For a recent interview with Greg and John DiMaggio (who voices as the other commentator) with their thoughts on the game and what went on behind the scenes, do take a moment to read this article.

818 is a new independent comedy film that will find Greg in the role of a character named Barry. There is very little to be found about the film itself at the moment, let alone about Greg's character. However, the plot synopsis as posted via the 818 IMDB page can be quoted as follows:

For eight glorious years Alyssa Rampart-Pillage ruled prime-time television, starring in the hit medical drama, "HMO Nurse." But these days, Alyssa's doing commercials for her husband's Valley-based appliance store chain. After the accidental death of their daughter, Alyssa's husband has a spiritual crisis, and starts giving away all of their money to charity... until Alyssa intervenes. A modern riff on Electra, 818 is about Fame, Family and Celebrity Justice.
